Book Review: Uncommon Ground - Courtesy Of Struik Christian Media
Timothy Keller and John Inazu along with ten other collaborators have produced a work that is hard to find anywhere else on the market. 'Uncommon Ground' searches to find a way to bridge the gap and allowing Christians to work with what they have to propogate the Gospel in truly unconventional ways.
Through the personal telling of life experiences, these twelve authors spread themselves bare and show a cetain vulnerability when confronting life issues surrounding race and prejudice. They show how as Christians we can find alternative Gospel-centred solutions to the negativity and all the pushbacks we recieve.
Each chapter is by a different author and each one speaks from the perspective of where they are as believers and from the standpoint of their vocations. For example Tim Keller writes personally from the perspective of being a pastor and John Inazu from the standpoint of having been a lawyer and now a teacher of law and religious studies. Sara Groves speaks from being a Christian musician and Leccrae from being a Christian rapper. And the list goes on with the other authors as they approach life, culture and race from a Biblical point of view and speak about building bridges and relationships that would inspire others around us.
Some of the best lessons the authors speak about collaboratively is that we can't write off anyone even if they disagree with us and our beliefs. We need to build trust through humility and a sense of vulnerability that leaves us open to revealing God's grace in our lives.
I could go on speaking, but what Tim Keller and John Inazu have produced is something that we all need to interact with. How can we reveal the culture of Jesus to a worldy culture that arrogantly chooses to ignore him? There is no one particular answer but atleast there is a way that has been paved for us to walk on and look deeper into the issues that divide us and seek solutions through the scriptures that can bring us together.
This book would serve all Christians alike and would be a great help to Church leaders that desire solutions to close the divide that separates the church racially and/or otherwise. This book is certainly going to be one of those that will be on my desk and never on the shelf.
To all my fellow Christian leaders, Please don't hesitate to get a copy. It's one of the best investments you would make. Tim Keller along with the other authors certainly do not disappoint!
Much Blessings,
Shane.
