Gideon: It's A Case Of Mistaken Identity
"And the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.” - Judges 6 Vs 12 (ESV)
This is the way God addresses Gideon, calls him a "mighty man of Valor." But in verse 15 his response is completely different and somewhat weak.
"And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.” " - Judges 6 Vs 15 (ESV)
So, the question I ask is this, who has the case of mistaken Identity ? Was it God who looked at Gideon and got the wrong impression ? I believe we all know the answer to this obvious yet simple question.
The same applies to us every single day. Everyday, we wake up with the same attitude as Gideon had when He responded to God in that moment. We think of ourselves in the least ways possible, as did Gideon. That's the way Gideon saw himself.
But here's the point today, when God looked at Gideon, He didn't see someone who was weak and filled with fear. When He looked at Gideon He knew exactly who Gideon was. He was this great "mighty man of Valor." Because that's the way God created him.
God created each of us in the same way too. Every person was created with purpose. He looks at us differently from the way we look at ourselves. You may see so much weakness in yourself and may declare certain things that you think may be wrong with you. But God sees you differently! He sees someone who can do so much with their lives.
Seek Him, because only in Him you will find the strength you need. In Him you will discover so much more. Gideon discovered that he could defeat an army with only a handful of men just because he chose to see himself the way God saw him.
The cross isn't for the weak, but then again it was there because of the weak. It's paradoxical in nature. Christ did for us what we could not do for ourselves. That's because we once were weak. But now that we know what the cross represents for each of us, we cannot take it lightly. It means we pursue God in relationship and do great things, the way Gideon did great things in fulfilling His will in and through our lives. The cross reminds us that we're no longer weaklings. We have been restored.
Don't mistake your identity and call yourself weak. You are sons and daughters of God. You are worth so much more.
As we draw closer to celebrating Easter, I humbly remind you, stop looking at the world around you and see the perfection in which you were created in. The world may look you down, but the Lord will lift you up. See yourself through the Saviour's eyes.
Much Blessings,
Shane.
